Swedish National Commission for UNESCO visited Mozambique

22-28 October 2006
: A delegation of eleven members of the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO went on a one week visit to Mozambique, to learn more about UNESCO's work in the field. The program included a visit to Ilha Mozambique, to the Community Multimedia Centre in Namaacha, the primary school in Maguiaguana and a number of museums, galleries and cultural institutions.

Exhibition of African teaching and learning material

4-8 September 2006: 
Teaching and learning materials from more than twenty-five African countries - in English, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Kiswahili and more than thirty other African languages - were presented at the exhibition which took place at the Joaquim Chissano Conference Centre in Maputo from 4-8 September. The exhibition was organized parallel to the Conference of Ministers of Education of the African Union (COMEDAF) for the launching of the Plan of Action for the Second Decade of Education for Africa.

National craft fair celebrating the artisans of Mozambique

3 July 2006:

he second National Craft Fair of Mozambique  took place from 29 June until 2 July
at the Franco Mozambican Cultural Centre in Maputo. More than 50 groups of artisans from the whole country were offering quality crafts such as ceramics and Maconde masks from Cabo Delegado, basketry from Inhambane, jewlry from Nampula, Manica and Sofala,  decorative candles, batiks, leather products and iron works from Maputo, and much more.

UNESCO's Community Multimedia Centre Initiative praised by independent study 
29 May 2006: UNESCO’s Community Multimedia Centre initiative is contributing to improving quality of life through access to information, according to an independent evaluation report carried out by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). UNESCO’s CMC initiative promotes sustainable local development through community-based facilities that combine traditional media like radio, television and print with new information communication technologies (ICTs) such as computers, the Internet, and mobile devices. more

Fifty five thousand teachers needed to achieve Education For All in Mozambique
24 April 2006: The shortage of teachers in quantity and quality - and the poor working conditions of many teachers - dominated the messages from the students, teachers and parents during the launching of the EFA week (24-30 April) in Mozambique in Changalane, Maputo province. The teachers of Mozambique were celebrated, under the headline “Toda Criança Precica de um Professor”. more

New project for development of the cultural institutions of Mozambique
3 April 2006: UNESCO and Ministry of Education and Culture have signed a plan of operation for a new project for the development of the cultural institutions of Mozambique. The Project is financed by Sweden with a total budget of SEK 20,000,000 (approx. three million dollars) for the three years duration. more

Protect our Water, protect our culture!
22 March 2006: World Water Day 2006 was guided by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) under the theme “Water and Culture”. In Mozambique World Water Day 2006 was celebrated with big events in Zambezia and Maputo. more

Women making news in Mozambique
8 March 2006: In Mozambique only 2 % of the editors and 25 % of the journalists and are women. UNESCO calls on the media worldwide to hand over editorial responsibility to women at International Women’s Day on 8 March, and to participate in the global initiative “Women Make the News” 2006.

Improving HIV and AIDS responses in teachers education
3 March 2006: Responding to the challenges of HIV and AIDS within the education sector, UNESCO Maputo today signed an agreement with the Mozambican Ministry of Education and Culture on implementing a project to build the capacity of teacher training institutions. The project is funded by Japan with a budget of 225 000 USD over two years. more

New book on slavery routes and oral traditions in South-eastern Africa
28 February 2006: With support from UNESCO Maputo, Dr. Benigna Zimba has been contacting local people in Mozambique, Uganda, South Africa and Tanzania living in the places were the slaves were embarked only a few generations ago, resulting in the book “Slave Routes and Oral Tradition in South-Eastern Africa”.

Avante Mozambique! – festival promoting cultural tourism for development
27 February 2006: UNESCO Maputo is taking part in the biggest cultural event ever organized in Mozambique. The festival “Avante Mozambique!” aims to put Mozambican culture on the world map and promote cultural tourism for development. The event will take place from August 28 – September 10, 2006.

Community Radio Forum confirms a strong common vision at second national conference
31 October – 04 November 2005: More than 125 participants took part in the second National Conference of Community Radios, representing 48 community media organizations. The conference in Chimoio confirmed that a strong common vision of the organization has been developed and that FORCOM has a strong potential to become an effective strategic forum ensuring sustainability to all members.

Six scale-up CMCs off the ground in Mozambique
5 September 2005: The first Community Multimedia Centre integrated in the scale-up was inaugurated on 9 May in Xinavane. The ribbon was cut by the Minister of Science and Technology, Venâncio Massingue. Two weeks later President Armando Guebuza cut the ribbon of a new CMC in Chókwè. Since then four further Scale Up CMCs have been inaugurated - in Moamba, Ribáuè, Chiúre and Alto Molócuè. With other initiatives and the three already existing pilot CMCs, Mozambique now has twelve members of the CMC family offering its services to rural communities in the country.
