National craft fair celebrating the artisans of Mozambique

3 July 2006:
For the second time the National Crafts Fair of Mozambique was celebrating the proud traditions of Mozambican handicrafts, taking place from 29 June until
2 July at the Franco Mozambican Cultural Centre in Maputo.

More than 50 groups of artisans from the whole country were offering quality crafts such as ceramics and Maconde masks from Cabo Delegado, basketry from Inhambane, jewlry from Nampula, Manica and Sofala,  decorative candles, batiks, leather products and iron works from Maputo, and much more

A great number of visitors had the chance to meet meet some of the best artisans from the whole country and see their great variety of products, combining old traditions with modern elements - for modern use. To enrich the fair, some artisans from

South Africa  were also invited to exchange experiences with artisans in their neighbouring country.

A training workshop was organized parallell with the  crafts fair, aiming to enhance the capacity of Mozambican artisans in efficiently managing their businesses by creating knowledge on product development/design, marketing and procurement of raw material.

A series of debates  discussed the situation of the handicrafts sector in the country, problems and challenges for the development of the sector, how to promote the role of handicrafts in creating work and income opportunities, and how
to increase the export of Mozambican handicraft products.
During the fair there was also an opportunity for children to learn how to paint and make sculptures from some of the most proeminent artisans of Mozambique.

The fair and the workshop were jointly organized by UNESCO, Aid to Artisans, Comércio Justo and the National Arts Museum, as part of a more comprehensive project aiming to promote the crafts sector of Mozambique. The fair was supported by Centro Cultural Franco-Mocambicain, TDM and TV Miramar.
