Island of Mozambique
- Ilha
de Moçambique
Island of Mozambique
is located in the northern part of Mozambique (Nampula
Province) and was the first capital of the country during the Portuguese colonial period. In 1898 the capital was
transferred to Lorenço Marques, today's Maputo,
because of the slowdown of the economy of the Island town.
The incredible architectural unity of the island
derives from the uninterrupted use of the same building
techniques with the same material and the same decorative
principles. The patrimony includes Fortress
St. Sebastian, other defensive buildings, museums
and numerous religious buildings, dating back to the 16th century.
Inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1991,
the Island of Mozambique
is the only world heritage site in the country. It
needs special attention in all aspects, starting from
rehabilitation of the buildings, revitalization of the
economy and the social tissue.
A
major project of
UNESCO Maputo culture sector is the
rehabilitation of
"Fortaleza
São Sebasteão" (St.
Sebastian).
With financial contributions from Japan and
Portugal, the master plan of the management of the
site is being prepared in cooperation with
the World Heritage Centre.
