 CULTURE

Within the area of Culture UNESCO assists Mozambique in building capacities for policy elaboration, management and conservation of cultural heritage (tangible and intangible) in order to strengthen the safeguarding and promotion of the Mozambican cultural heritage sites and monuments, as well as the intangible heritage (e.g. Timbila). Assistance is also provided in the preservation and promotion of the cultural diversity, creativity and the cultural industries in Mozambique.

UNESCO is initiating a major restoration project of Fort Sebastian at the Mozambique Island, the only World Heritage Site of Mozambique. Additionally, UNESCO is collaborating with ADB for elaboration of a major programme for the development of the island. more

UNESCO Maputo and the Ministry of Education and Culture recently (April 2006) signed an agreement for the implementation of a major project to strengthen the cultural institutions of Mozambique.  The project is funded by Sweden and  encompasses on one hand the support to selected cultural institutions in the country and on the other hand, capacity building of government entities at central and decentralized level for the management of the culture sector. more

UNESCO focuses on preservation and promotion of Mozambican crafts traditions and enhancing artisan skills through workshops, crafts prizes and exhibitions. UNESCO Maputo develops strategies to open self-employment opportunities in the crafts sector for disadvantaged youth and provides support in professional skills development of craftswomen on product development, marketing and small business management. The office furthermore aims to facilitate the
access of craftspeople and designers to international and national markets.

UNESCO Maputo also provides technical assistance to the Government in undertaking steps to meet the requirements set in international agreements such as the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972), the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003), and the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural ESxpressions (2005).
