HIV and AIDS is mainstreamed in all UNESCO Maputo
programmes. There is therefore an HIV/AIDS component in all
activities within the areas of Education, Culture, Science
and Communication. However the office is also implementing a
number of HIV/AIDS specific projects:
A socio-cultural approach: UNESCO Maputo has
developed a methodology to assist HIV/AIDS prevention
intervention designers, implementers and evaluators to
improve the effectiveness of their activities by making them
socio-culturally more appropriate. UNESCO advocacy on this
has had a strong impact on national policy on HIV/AIDS, and
the design of socio-culturally appropriate interventions is
now compulsory for organizations seeking funds from the
National HIV/AIDS Council in Mozambique. The methodology is
described in a manual called "Making HIV/AIDS
interventions more effective", which is also available
on CD-ROM.

education through innovative training of teacher trainers
and production of guidelines for the implementation of
HIV/AIDS preventive education in Teachers’ Education
Institutions. The project has been developed within the
context of
EDUCAIDS,
a global initiative to help governments take necessary
actions to protect the education system from the effects of
the HIV/AIDS pandemic. more
Fighting stigma and discrimination:
Within the context of education and Human Rights UNESCO
Maputo is developing a tool to fight stigma and
discrimination within communities, through community radios,
(youth) activists and counseling centers.
Government HIV/AIDS workplace policy: UNESCO Maputo
is assisting the Ministry of Education and Culture in the
elaboration and implementation of the HIV/AIDS workplace
policy, in collaboration with ILO.
Capacity building of youth associations: On behalf of
the UN system in Mozambique UNESCO Maputo has also
implemented a project aiming at building capacities of youth
associations and youth serving institutions to enhance their
