In
Sciences UNESCO Maputo is focusing on building capacity in
the area of sustainable management of water resources, which
has been a major concern in Mozambique in the past 6 years
and affects directly millions of people. Focus will be given
on water management and the establishment of regional
networking mechanisms.
UNESCO Maputo also contributed to the establishment of the
four UNESCO chairs at Eduardo Mondlane University:
• UNESCO Chair in tropical medicine, established in 1998
• UNESCO Chair on Man and Environment in Southern Africa,
established in 1998 within the framework of the UNITWIN
Network for Southern Africa
• UNESCO Chair in Cardiopediatrics, established in 1998
• UNESCO Chair in Marine Sciences and Oceanographic Issues,
established in 1998
UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs projects deal with training and
research activities and cover all major fields of knowledge
within UNESCO’s competence such as Education, Human Rights,
Cultural Development, Environment, Basic and Engineering
Sciences, Communication, etc. The principal beneficiaries of
this programme are institutions of higher learning in
developing countries and countries in transition.
UNESCO Maputo has also assisted Mozambique in the
strengthening of sciences education in secondary schools and
promoted access of girls to sciences education
